Cape York rodeo fans and those from farther afield made a beeline for Andoom Oval to help the Weipa Rodeo Association mark a special 20th edition of the event on 22-23 August.

An estimated 6,000 adults and children feasted on two days of rodeo action in the arena before Weipa Rodeo veteran Danny Phegan and his band showed country music icon James Blundell how to entertain a western Cape York rodeo crowd after the dust settled each night.

Tourists Cal and Vanessa Andersen, who timed their lap of Australia from their Tasmanian to coincide with the event, said it had well and truly exceeded their expectations.

“It’s just amazing, isn’t it?” Ms Andersen said.

“We’d heard it was a big party from other people who have been up here over the years, but we weren’t expecting anything this fantastic; it’s special to be here when they’re celebrating 20 years of the event.”
