The event, part of NPA Family and Community Services’ program of professional development opportunities for women, was designed to celebrate, honour and inspire women as they pursue excellence at home, at work and in the community.
Ms Lui said she told the captive audience, which included school students, about what motivated her to run for state parliament in 2016.
She also talked about what it felt like to be elected, the challenges and opportunities she had experienced along the way, and gave advice for other women who were interested in running for office.
Other speakers include NPARC mayor Patricia Yusia, Torres Shire mayor Vonda Malone and Dr Rose Elu from Relationships Australia.
“It is a great privilege to be the Member for Cook and to be the first, but absolutely not the last, Torres Strait Islander in Parliament,” Ms Lui said.
“I encourage any woman considering running for office, seeking a promotion, considering study or further study, to give it a go.
“We are capable of much more than we can imagine.”
NPA Family and Community Services women’s development officer Harriett Phineasa organised the event and said around 60 people attended the Bamaga forum.
“We were unable to hold our annual International Women’s Day event due to unforeseen circumstances, so this is our first event for 2021,” she said.
“We hope to hold these events every year to help support, empower and inspire women from the NPA and Torres Strait.”
