Laura Rodeo Association stalwart Debbie Gostelow says she hopes the Cape’s most popular event isn’t forgotten in the new year after it copped a hiding from the floods.
“Right now everyone should be focusing on helping those people who have lost their homes, but we’re going to need some help in the New Year if we are to survive,” the long-time secretary said.
“The rodeo started in 1977 and from the old people’s accounts this has only happened once before and it was long before we had all the infrastructure and equipment to cater for an event for thousands.
“Unfortunately this time it has completely inundated almost all of our buildings and gear. We have a massive clean-up ahead with replacement costs running into tens of thousands of dollars, if not more.
“We have lost so many appliances, small tools, mowers, grounds maintenance equipment, stores, cooking equipment … the list goes on and on.
“To say we are all heartbroken is an understatement and we hope you will all help us pull together to make sure the 2024 event goes ahead.
“Our hearts go out to all those who have lost property, homes, businesses and cars in this awful flood of 2023.”
