Hari humbles Wackers
A big field of 19 golfers vied for bragging rights on the back nine of Carpentaria Golf Club during Wackers action on 6 May. Scott Triffitt, Mick Foy and Dave Sands all carded impressive rounds off the stick, but it was Hari Ginate who won the day with a nett 28, four strokes ahead of runner-up Gary Head.
The Cape loves a good family fight, and this week it was the father-and-daughter duo of Grant Crossley and Rhiannan Head slugging it out for Bradman’s honours, with the daughter taking the chocolates in a countback lesson. Bob Marshall claimed the 15th pin prize, while Matt Byrne reminded the field about his hot-and-cold ability with the irons by bagging the gong on the 18th.
League legends visit
The Central Cape Suns will bring some household names to western Cape York when the club hosts an International Legends of League clash at Andoom Oval on 23 May.
Some of the players scheduled to run onto the paddock include Sam Thaiday, John Hopoate and Ben Hannant.
Players will conduct school and community visits in Weipa, Mapoon, Aurukun, New Mapoon and Napranum in the lead-up to the game.
Keep an eye on the Central Cape Suns Facebook page for details as game day approaches.
Brent ‘bridesmaid’ again
The man who has caught more bouquets than any other golfer on Cape York did it again last weekend when players contested the Cooktown Golf Club May Monthly Medal.
Graham Burton took home the winner’s chocolates with a sharp nett 65, with Brent “I’m Sick of Catching Flowers” Hetaraka had to settle for another billing as bridesmaid three strokes behind on nett 68.
GB also claimed the pin prize on 2/11, with Terry Young nearly jarring one on 9/18.
Golfers are reminded they can still register for the 2026 Cooktown Open, to be held on 27-28 June, by emailing [email protected].
