Head victorious again

Carolyn Head was the best of the bunch again when 15 golfers tackled the Carpentaria Golf Club back nine on 9 September for the weekly Wackers competition. After hitting a personal best score of 51, Head netted a 30 to secure the win for the second week in a row, while Rob Richardson’s gross of 45 and nett 31 was just one point away to land him in the runner-up position. Richardson also took home a pin prize on the 15th hole, alongside Hari Ginate, who landed closest to the 18th. It was a fight for Bradman’s, with Ben Woods believing he had it with a 53 that included a 10 on number 12, but Vivian Chan’s low handicap of eight gave her that category despite hitting a 48. Wackers welcomed back Mick Cernaka, who proved he hadn’t lost his skills with a 45 off the stick after a six-month absence.

Suburbs TI footy champions

After four months of Torres Strait rugby league action, the 2026 Island Rooster Cup came to a thrilling close on 12 September when teams battled for bragging rights on Thursday Island. Following a series of victories from May in the lead-up to the showdown, it was the TI Roosters and Tamwoy Town’s Suburbs who secured a spot in the grand final at 3 pm. By halftime, Suburbs had already dominated the game with a score of 14-0, and continued the path to victory to secure the 2026 championship 38-10.

Cooktown closes Cowboys’ season

Cooktown’s budding footy stars enjoyed the opportunity of a lifetime to play on the same field as their idols during the North Queensland Cowboys’ final home game of the season. Under-9s players from Cooktown District Junior Rugby League Club joined their Innisfail counterparts at Queensland Country Bank Stadium as part of the Cowboys’ Mini League program on 5 September. The Crocs made the most of their moment under the lights, displaying great teamwork and big smiles throughout their exhibition match at half-time during the Cowboys v Rooster NRLW fixture.
