Cooktown Races countdown

The Cooktown Racecourse will be the place to be in less than six weeks when the 152nd annual Cooktown Races kicks off on 7 November. Tickets are now on sale for the five-card program attracting hundreds of local and visiting punters keen to bet on their favourites. The region’s fashionistas are also set to impress under the theme, “Racing to the Reef”, highlighting Cooktown coastal charm at the year’s last race meet. Gates will open at 10 am ahead of the first race at noon.

Craven clinches Wackers

A thrilling neck-and-neck battle between Ross Craven and Rhi Head meant everyone else was fighting for third place at the Weipa Wednesday Wackers showdown on 23 September. The pair returned to the clubhouse sporting matching nett scores of 36, with Craven boasting an excellent 38 off the stick with some massive drives, while Head celebrated a PB of 48 with her driving and chipping skills. However, after a countback, Ross proved too good, despite Head also taking out a pin prize alongside Aaron May. Bradman’s was awarded to Paiwan Lui, with Hari Ginate just half a shot off him.

Weipa rugby league callout

The Central Cape Suns Junior Rugby League Club is on the lookout for its next group of volunteers to lead players into the 2027 season. All roles — executive committee, coaches, managers, game-day volunteers and general support roles — have now been vacated and are open for nomination ahead of the annual general meeting on 20 October. To help guide Weipa’s young athletes next year, email a nomination to [email protected].
