Competition, camaraderie and connection are the name of the game in any sport, but it was especially prevalent when the Cooktown Bowls Club hosted bowlers from across the region at the annual Ladies Orchid Festival meet.
The Cooktown greens came to life on 16-17 May when 42 women from West Cairns, Marlin Coast, Edge Hill, Mareeba, Mossman, Yungaburra, Edmonton and Atherton clubs enjoyed a weekend of friendly competition and some good ol’ Cape York hospitality.
While previous festivals have seen teams representing their own local clubs, this year’s event switched it up by featuring teams made up of mixed clubs.
Acting president Delma Badger said it was an interesting twist that allowed players to grow and create deeper connections.
“It was good to play with others that you don’t normally play with every week, because everyone has their own unique style, and you learn from them,” she said.
“I am especially pleased to say that the attitude of everyone to simply have a good time was wonderful.”
After 14 teams of three played 10 ends on Saturday and Sunday, there was just a one-point difference between 1st and 2nd place, with Team L — Judy Jenner, Christie Colley and Margaret Brunni — triumphant with four wins + 18.
Badger said she was proud of Cooktown’s ability to host a wonderful event each year for their fellow lawn bowlers.
“I was told by a few ladies that we excel in our hospitality, and we are very generous with our beautiful gestures,” she said.
“They enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the town and the friendly people, as well as a bit of competition on the green.
“The lady members of the Cooktown Bowls Club go above and beyond with hospitality, catering and gifts over the two days.”
