Eight of the field of 55 made “one day” “day one” when they laced up their shoes for their inaugural Weipa parkrun on 12 September.

Barry Cronin led the pack, greeting the timekeepers almost three minutes ahead of his nearest competitor at 22 minutes, 13 seconds.

First-timer Travis Sell impressed the weekend running community with his second-place finish at 25:05, followed by Charlotte Buchholz, who completed the five-kilometre circuit in 25:29 to be the first female across the finish line.

Bianca Carilaf, Landon Raye, Dan and Leanne Murray, Melissa Barber, Nina Barker and Nathaniel Pollard were the other newbies to pound the parkrun pavement for the first time on Saturday.

Catherine Samuel, Carmen Dixon, Wendy Nolan and Aine Davui were the four participants to notch up PB efforts on the day.

This week’s volunteering thanks went to Amanda Allender, Nanthini Kanthan, Donna Jewell, Emma Eyre, Ben Fielding, Chris Blythe, Emily McLeod and Lyndsey Fielding.

Anyone wanting to join the parkrun excitement every Saturday morning can do so by assembling at the shelter next to the hospital roundabout in Nanum before the starter’s pistol fires at 7 o’clock.
