With Weipaites more focused on triumphing with a fishing rod than with a club this past weekend, a smaller than usual field of Dawnbusters vied for golfing glory on 7 June.
Eleven golfers stuck to their strengths as on-land competitors, waking up bright and early to take on the Carpentaria Golf Course front nine, while most recovered after night two of the 2026 Weipa Fishing Classic.
A very chuffed Derek Tata snagged the top spot with a 53 off the stick after giving his daughter-in-law the morning off from the grills, relegating the BBQ job to his son, Oliver. This took the “A-grade” Tata out of the running, ensuring a win for Dad.
A satisfied Scott “Silent Assassin” Triffitt took home the bridesmaid prize with the second-best score of the morning and a few rivals absent from the field.
Triffitt said he knew he was in with a chance when nemesis Grant Crossley flew out to Cairns for his father’s 99th birthday, leaving only Jim “Lefty” Lucas, whose handicap had been shredded from the previous Sunday’s win, and who was off glamping in his caravan for the long weekend.
Beth Dall, true to form, took out the Hoffmans award and the women’s longest drive, while Luke Marston pulled out the big guns to take the men’s longest drive.
As it does so often, the nearest the pin prize went begging yet again. Perhaps it will be claimed next weekend when the crew shifts up to the back nine tee block, which is considerably shorter than the front nine tee block, making it somewhat easier to hit the green.
Golfers welcomed new player Ryan Lang as he took on his first game of Dawnbusters.
Dawnbusters will take on the back nine next Sunday 14 June, with groups getting away at about 7 am.
