The revamp of a vital healthcare facility servicing one of the most populated islands in the Torres Strait has been finished.

Darnley Island (Erub) Primary Health Care Centre on the waterfront at The Esplanade was battered by the extreme marine conditions and a bit worse for wear.

Torres and Cape Hospital & Health Service (TCHHS) engaged a contractor for a full roof replacement across the centre, morgue and staff accommodation, which were constructed in the early 2000s.

Roofing work had to be undertaken due to damage caused by harsh marine conditions.

On Wednesday, TCHHS announced refurbishments were completed and delivered “important upgrades for staff and the local community”.

The upgrades “will help protect the buildings from the harsh marine environment while supporting safer, more reliable healthcare delivery”.

Queensland Health workers who live on-site will enjoy better day-to-day living and working conditions. The centre is also serviced by visiting specialists and community health providers.

Darnley Island, which is about 3 km long by 2 km wide, is part of the Torres Strait’s eastern group of islands and has a fairly transient population of about 300.
