Much-loved Aussie science communicator Dr Karl – well-known for his work on radio and TV – is set to take to the stage in Cape York, Cook Shire Council has revealed.

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM will host An Evening with Dr Karl: The Science of Survival at Cooktown Events Centre from 6 pm on Friday 30 October.

Cook Shire Mayor Robyn Holmes said the council was delighted to welcome Dr Karl to Cooktown.

“Dr Karl has an incredible ability to make science fascinating, entertaining and accessible, whether you’re eight or 80,” she said.

“And there could hardly be a more fitting place for a conversation about the science of survival than Cook Shire.

“We live in an extraordinary part of the world. Cyclones, bushfires, flooding and extreme weather are realities our communities understand very well, so this is an opportunity to look at some very serious subjects from a completely different, engaging and entertaining perspective.”

Ms Holmes said the event would bring people together and create conversation around disaster resilience, making it more accessible to the whole community.

“Building resilience isn’t only about what happens when disaster strikes. It’s also about understanding the environment and risks around us, asking questions and building knowledge before we need it,” she said.

“This is certainly not going to feel like a disaster preparedness seminar. It’s going to be a genuinely fun night out with one of Australia’s great communicators – and if people walk away entertained, curious and knowing something they didn’t know when they arrived, then we’ve achieved something pretty special.”

An Evening with Dr Karl: The Science of Survival will look at the science behind natural disasters, extreme weather and the natural world, as well as human resilience and how communities can adapt when the unexpected happens.

Attendees can expect to witness the curiosity, humour and enthusiasm that has made Dr Karl a popular name in national pop culture for years.

The event will feature special live music performances by the Stronger Together Community Choir and Nikki Doll & the North Project Trio.

Tickets are limited and will be on sale online through Trybooking from next Wednesday (26 August).

Council has urged those keen to attend to get in quick once tickets are up for grabs. General admission tickets will be $20 per person.

The event is fully licensed and anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The program is not recommended for children under eight.

But Dr Karl is also due to spend some time with local school students during his visit to Cooktown. Details of the visits will be shared with participating school communities, the council said.

For those who would like to attend An Evening with Dr Karl with friends and family, a limited number of reserved tables of eight are available for $144 each.

Food and drinks will be available to buy during the evening.
