AFTER two years in the darkness, one of Cape York’s biggest events will return next year.
The Laura Rodeo and Campdraft, along with the Laura Races, will be staged on the weekend of June 24 to 26.
Long-serving Laura Rodeo and Campdraft Association secretary Debbie Gostelow said the decision to go ahead was made on Friday.
“I think we put the news out there on Facebook on Saturday morning and our president (Chris Fahlstrum) was at the Malanda Bullride that night and he said there was a lot of buzz about Laura being back next year,” she said.
“It has definitely been missed by a lot of people in the Cape, who often use the Laura weekend as the opportunity to catch up with everyone for that once-a-year event.
“Obviously in 2020 we couldn’t run it because of COVID and this year’s event had to be cancelled because we just couldn’t be sure that COVID wouldn’t impact it.”
While Racing Queensland has yet to release its dates for 2022, Ms Gostelow said the Laura Cup race meeting would almost certainly be staged on Saturday, June 25.
“They get told their dates and then they pass them on to us because we always work around that race meeting,” she said.
“I think 2022 is going to be a very big event.”
