Lockhart River girl, 17, killed in Christmas Eve vehicle rollover

The festive season on eastern Cape York has started in tragedy following the death of a 17-year-old girl in Lockhart River on 24 December.

Police are investigating the fatal single-vehicle rollover that claimed the life of the girl on Christmas Eve.

Initial investigations indicate at about 11:10am on Wednesday, a silver Toyota Avalon was travelling east on Piiramo Street when it veered off the left side of the road, rolled, and came to a rest against a tree.

The girl, a 17-year-old Lockhart River resident, was driving the vehicle and died at the scene.

One passenger suffered non-life-threatening facial and body injuries, while two other passengers were not injured.

Lockhart River police, with the assistance from the specialist unit of Far North District Forensic Crash Unit, are investigating the circumstances of the crash and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or may have relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
