THE Cowboys didn’t get the result they wanted but Margaret Mara was still proud of their performance in jerseys she designed.
North Queensland lost 22-0 to reigning premiers Penrith on Friday night as part of the NRL’s Indigenous round.
The Cowboys were wearing a special strip designed by Ms Mara, a highly regarded Mapoon artist.
She said accepting the phone call to commission her as the artist for the Indigenous design “blew her mind”.
“Seeing the Cowboys running out on the field wearing the jersey with my design will be like my artwork coming to life, my story telling itself to all watching,” Ms Mara said.
“I will feel very proud as an Indigenous artist to be associated with a team that is involved in the education of our youth.
“It’s also special because of my positive experiences with NRL Cowboys House as my two daughters currently board there, and also being involved with the primary school in Mapoon, seeing firsthand the positive impact the Cowboys have on our students through Try for 5.
Ms Mara also designed the shirts and singles for students at NRL Cowboys House.
