Napranum’s only local school is entering an exciting new chapter of growth as it secures funding for significant upgrades capable of nurturing young minds.
Kluthuthu Christian College is preparing for its first major expansion four years after opening its doors, following the approval of a $1.3 million Queensland Independent Schools grant.
The funding will contribute to the school’s $2.3 million building project, which will include three learning areas, dedicated withdrawal spaces, a new staff room, a covered outdoor learning area, external access improvements, new furniture, equipment and site works, as well as professional planning and construction services.
Principal Vernon Clark said the project reflected the steady growth of the school, which began with 13 enrolments, and had surpassed 50.
“We are hoping to have all of the construction completed by next year,” he said.
“This will consolidate our growth in the area, and it will also give confidence to the community.
“We’re moving away from the demountables, so it will actually signify that we’re here to stay.”
Mr Clark said the permanency and improved facilities were sought after by the community, many of whom sent their children to Weipa for their schooling every day.
“It’s important for the community that they have an educational institution that they can attend without having to travel,” he said.
“Especially for the younger students, they’re more keen to come to us than to get in a bus and travel to Weipa.
“It’s an answer to what the community wants. We’re working according to the community’s desires to have their own school in the area.”
