It was a morning of wins for first-timers when 47 participants hit the pavement at Weipa parkrun #477 on Saturday (4 July).

Of the 17 newcomers, three finished in the top five after completing the five-kilometre circuit in under 24 minutes, with a further two making the top 10 in under 26 minutes.

Daman Takkar led the pack on his maiden Weipa parkrun to greet the timekeepers at 21 minutes, 54 seconds, while fellow newbie William Bolton finished fifth with a time of 23:19.

Ashleigh Salter, another new addition to the Saturday morning field, stopped the clock at 23:18 to be the first female across the finish line.

Three new personal-best times were recorded by Tamara Lambert (27:12), Nicola Campbell (28:53) and Lachlan Brewer (34:23).

This week’s volunteering thanks went to Melanie Brewer, Nanthini Kanthan, Luke O’Day, David Tuckwood, Thomas Brewer, Tania Vickers and Susan Tuckwood.

Weipa parkrun is on the verge of a major milestone this month, with the 10th anniversary of the first event on 23 July, 2016, set to be celebrated in style.

Anyone wanting to join the parkrun excitement every Saturday morning can do so by assembling at the shelter next to the hospital roundabout in Nanum before the starter’s pistol fires at 7 o’clock.
