There must have been something in the winter solstice air when two golfers impressed with sub-40 scores in Sunday’s Dawnbusters showdown.
New players Mary Gorder, Maureen VanMaanen and Carpentaria Golf Club manager Judy Marshall, along with visiting ex-Dawnbuster John Graham, provided a fresh energy to the field on 21 June.
Eighteen-year-old Gorder, stepping onto unknown greens with a +2 handicap, showcased her abilities to score a three-over-par 39 off the stick.
Her score was matched only by Dawnbusters veteran Grant Crossley, who hit his best round in four years. When handicaps were applied, Crossley’s 39 was enough to get him over the line as the morning’s winner, but he may not be so lucky next week with a handicap of three after a 21-point slashing.
The golfer was thrilled with the win anyway, adding that “every now and then, the planets do align to allow such a score”.
The golfing gods were looking down on Crossley, who also took out the men’s longest drive. Gorder, visiting for the fishing, flew out of Weipa straight after her round, but not without claiming the women’s longest drive first.
Luke Marston, only one off the pace, came through in second place to claim the Bridesmaid prize in his ninth game of Dawnbusters. Nearest the pin was won by the club’s very own manager, Marshall, while Beth Dall unsurprisingly took home the Hoffman’s crown.
New players are always welcome as Dawnbusters take on the back nine on 28 June, with an expected tee-off time of about 7 am.
