Police are investigating following the discovery of what appears to be a human foot in the Northern Peninsula Area on Thursday morning.

On April 24, police were notified of the find, at a New Mapoon bait and tackle shop, by a member of the public just before 12pm.

Bamaga officer in charge Senior Sergeant Jonathan Smy told Cape York Weekly police were waiting on the results of an x-ray to determine whether the grizzly discovery was human.

[W]e are yet to definitively say it is a human bone,” he said.

“It appears it may have been unearthed at nearby roadworks, and likely dragged to the location by an animal.

“It was x-rayed yesterday (24 April) at the Bamaga Hospital, and I am waiting on confirmation from an x-ray review that it is not human.”

Investigations are under way into the circumstances and identification of the suspected foot.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Bamaga police or Policelink on 13 14 44.
