UPDATE: 26 March 2025 – 2:30pm

Police have released vision of an ongoing search and rescue operation in Aurukun, after a 52-year-old man was reported missing late on Saturday evening.

Police had initially reported the man went missing on Sunday (23 March), however, Cape York Weekly understands from Queensland Police Service sources he was actually reported missing at about 12:30am on 23 March.

EARLIER: 25 March 2025 – 3:30pm

Police have launched a search and rescue operation east of Aurukun after a 52-year-old man was reported missing on 22 March.

Initial information indicates that around 4pm on Saturday, the man was hunting roughly 70 kilometres north-east of the remote Cape York community when the vehicle he was travelling in became bogged.

Shortly after, he became separated from the group he was travelling with, and the group conducted a search before returning to Aurukun and alerting police.

On 23 March, police launched a search and rescue operation involving officers, Aurukun Shire Council, APN Cape York, community members and aerial assets.

As of this afternoon (26 March), the search is continuing, and anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Aurukun police station or Policelink on 13 14 44.
