Thursday Island’s Samuel Nai might think some famous sports identities have moved in with him at Townsville University Hospital.
A couple of weeks after North Queensland Cowboys players Tom Mikaele and Bree Chester dropped in on the 14-year-old who’s fighting his way back after a shark attack, the team returned.
This time, Bree was joined by Cowboys in Capes ambassador Murray Taulagi, NRL teammate Mason Barber and everyone’s favourite mascot Bluey.
Together they delivered a Santa sack full of presents and plenty of smiles for Sam and the other children.
“Christmas time is all about giving, and being able to bring some happiness to these kids means a lot to us,” Murray said.
“Bluey definitely stole the show, all the kids were super excited to see him and seeing their faces light up reminds us how powerful a small act of kindness can be, especially at this time of year.”
Sam was bitten on the torso in waters off Thursday Island in October.
The teenager suffered significant blood loss, life-threatening injuries to his abdomen and internal organs. He was taken to Thursday Island Hospital before being flown to Townsville for surgery.
Despite 11 surgeries in seven weeks, he’s showing incredible resilience on his road to recovery.
Cowboys in Capes is presented by Sun Metals. This visit, delivered in collaboration with Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation, included stopping in at Townsville Hospital’s Children’s and Paediatric Oncology wards.
