It seemed spring was the season for new Dawnbusters when golfers battled for bragging rights on the Carpentaria Golf Course back nine on 6 September.
Veterans Oliver Tata (38), Brandon Waretini (45) and Luke Christie (46) led the pack with solid off-the-stick scores, but it was Jimmy Hoffman, proving you can teach an old dog new tricks, who took the win for the morning, carding a 50 gross, net 16.
Hoffman, who was only supposed to be visiting Weipa for a few weeks, has managed to sneak in eight games this year, and has a chance to qualify with 10 games for the Dawnbuster Breakup scheduled for 8 November.
The Bridesmaid went to Matt Byrne, who bagged second place with a 47 gross, net 17.
First-timer Brandon Pembar took out the prestigious Hoffman’s Award, narrowly edging out Chelsea Buckley and Lilly Pembar by a single stroke, while Owen Wapshott pulled out the big guns on his second game of Dawnbusters to take the men’s longest drive victory.
Helen Sabatino was under strict instructions on Sunday not to show up her partner, Randal O’Neill, and amazingly, both carded a 51 for the morning. Breaking ranks, however, Sabatino went on to bag two prizes – the women’s longest drive and Nearest the Pin on the 18th green.
New players are always welcome as Dawnbusters take on the front nine on 13 September, with an expected tee-off time of about 7 am.
