A beautiful Weipa winter chill greeted golfers on the Carpentaria Golf Course back nine when 19 Dawnbusters went head-to-head on Sunday (14 June).
With the morning punctuated by cyclonic gusts of wind, only two low scores were recorded — from Scott “Silent Assassin” Triffitt with a 40 off the stick, and Oliver Tata with a 44 off the stick.
Tata, following in his father’s footsteps from last week, snagged Sunday’s golfing glory, proving that when he is not being relegated to barbecue duties, he is a force to be reckoned with on the fairway.
Triffitt narrowly caught the bridesmaid’s bouquet, losing out to a Tata man for the second week in a row after taking silver to Derek Tata in the 7 June contest. However, even that was hard-fought, with challenger Luke Marston coming into contention with the same net as Triffitt and missing out in the final countback.
Eddie “I only live over the road” Tiemens showed that a home close to the golf course can have its advantages when he claimed the men’s longest drive for the third week in a row — though it has been suggested that some more time practising on the fairway and less on the tee block may not go astray for the big-hitting Dawnbuster.
Mandy Crawford, hitting brilliant drives all morning, earned a win in the women’s longest-drive category.
Triffitt, licking his wounds from being pipped at the post again, redeemed himself somewhat with the Nearest the Pin on the 18th.
New players are always welcome as Dawnbusters take on the front nine on 21 June, with an expected tee-off time of about 7 o’clock.
