The weekly parkrun is an essential Saturday morning ritual for Weipa’s early risers, but would not be possible without the consistent volunteers working to keep the weekend running community going.

Volunteer Camille Freiberg celebrated her 200th Weipa parkrun at edition #486 alongside walkers and runners pounding the pavement on the five-kilometre circuit on 5 September.

Freiberg, sporting a Tail Walker vest, saw the 74 participants across the finish line, with top performer Chrisden Russ leading the pack in a time of 19 minutes, 6 seconds.

First-timers Rhys Evans and Dan Cahill made their mark on the morning run community, stopping the clock second and third at 23:05 and 23:19, respectively.

Silvie Hynes greeted the timekeepers at 23:54 to be the first female across the finish line.

Hannah Coster, Jade Pregelj, Maria Paraki, Alicia Evans, Steven Katene and Will Glazbrook were the six participants to notch up PB efforts on the day.

This week’s volunteering thanks went to Chris Blythe, Nanthini Kanthan, Donna Jewell, Chrisden Russ, Sarah Agnew, Fiona Dyer, Jemma Collins and, of course, Camille Freiberg.

Anyone wanting to join the parkrun excitement every Saturday morning can do so by assembling at the shelter next to the hospital roundabout in Nanum before the starter’s pistol fires at 7 o’clock.
