The championship round at the district bowls showdown produced drama, tension and a stirring fightback from the Weipa side, who bounced back from an earlier defeat to South Johnstone to claim a hard-fought 16–11 victory in a gripping final encounter.
After suffering a disappointing loss to South Johnstone in the previous round, Weipa entered the deciding clash with plenty to prove. What followed was one of the standout contests of the competition, with both sides trading momentum throughout a tense and highly competitive match.
The score remained tight for much of the game before Weipa steadied under pressure late, producing crucial bowls when it mattered most to edge clear by five shots.
The win capped off an impressive campaign for the Cape side, who showed resilience and composure after their earlier setback.
Across the overall standings, Weipa finished with a commanding 61-shot margin and eight match points, bringing the club its first win in 12 years.
Their strongest performance came in a dominant 30–2 victory against Marlin Coast earlier in the rounds, proving they were capable of explosive scoring as well as grinding out close wins.
South Johnstone also enjoyed a strong tournament, finishing with 10 match points and a healthy plus-34 margin.
Their earlier triumph over Weipa had many believing they would again have the upper hand, but the northern side responded magnificently when it counted most.
Ravenshoe and Edge Hill Cairns were also among the leading performers, both finishing with eight match points and strong shot differentials, while Stratford impressed with a plus-41 margin across the competition.
At the other end of the ladder, Babinda and Brothers Edmonton endured difficult campaigns against tough opposition, though several matches were far closer than the final margins suggested.
