A record number of runners have signed up to take part in the ninth annual Weipa Running Festival on Sunday.
Organisers told the Cape York Weekly the event had sold out of registrations “for the first time in the history of the festival”.
“Next year’s 10th anniversary is shaping up to be a big one if this year’s numbers are anything to go by,” they said.
“Please be careful on the roads on Sunday morning [July 26] and cheer our runners on as you see them.”
One highlight at this year’s event will be the involvement of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. The foundation is celebrating the RAW Championship and participating with about 70 runners from across Australia.

The championship is an annual event that brings together hundreds of First Nations and non-Indigenous runners from more than 20 community groups nationally.
Weipa Running Festival is also looking forward to sharing in the expertise of Paralympian and world champion Michael Roeger.
An after-party will be held at the ”Alby”, the Albatross Bay Resort, from 3 pm. Spectators are welcome.
The festival has been backed by a range of sponsors, and organisers extended their “deepest gratitude for their support”.
