State commits $60m to stage three of Cape York road upgrade

The State Government has pulled out its chequebook ahead of next month’s general election and committed $60 million to stage three of the Cape York Region Package (CYRP).

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said the commitment was subject to the Federal Government coming on board to continue the joint funding arrangement currently in place.

“The Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) is so important to the Far North, but anyone who knows the Cape knows it is prone to flooding and closures,” he said.

“That is why our stage two upgrades are so important, and with money on the table for stage three, it’s essential we get this work done.

“The Miles Government has put $60 million on the table, and I would encourage the Federal Government to assist us with further funding to ensure that our work to connect remote communities in Far North Queensland continues.

“Work is progressing well on CYRP stage two with construction of the Archer River bridge and sealing of a section of the Peninsula Developmental Road between Yarraden and Three Sisters expected to be completed later this year.”

The rollout of stage two of the CYRP has been heavily criticised due in part to the cost blowout of the Archer River bridge, with the delayed project almost quadrupling in cost to $131.25m.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said it was vital all stages of the CYRP were seen to completion.

“I have been a fierce advocate for this project, and with so much completed, it’s essential we see the full Cape York Region Package through to completion,” she said.

“This is work that improves road safety and access during the wet season, while reducing maintenance costs and closures that the PDR is prone to.”
