North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) has started its annual maintenance dredging program at the Port of Weipa.

NQBP chief executive officer Brendan Webb said the trailing suction hopper dredge Brisbane began its local 2025 operations in early May.

“Maintenance dredging is essential to the ongoing functionality of our ports,” he said.

“Just as we maintain roads and railways to support freight movement, our ports require regular upkeep to ensure trade continues to flow efficiently.

“This program maintains safe, navigable shipping channels for our port users and reflects standard practice for port authorities around the world.”

The 2025 dredging campaign will run for about four weeks, through until early June.

Mr Webb urged recreational and commercial waterway users to exercise caution during the works.

“The Brisbane and its support vessels have limited manoeuvrability, so we strongly encourage all boaties to remain alert and follow warning signals, including flags and lights.”

NQBP has managed the Port of Weipa’s annual maintenance dredging program for more than 35 years, and will also undertake works at Amrun for Rio Tinto.
