There is nothing like a night of music bingo to ensure Cooktown kids are getting the best school experiences possible, at least according to the Cooktown State School P&C Association.
Following a successful music bingo session in 2024, the P&C Association announced last week the roughly $6,000 raised would allow them to distribute $3,080.50 towards Peninsula sport costs, $500 towards year 6 graduation catering costs, $300 towards year 5 camp catering costs, $500 towards the year 7-8 Canberra trip, $300 for the senior art immersion trip, and $650 to assist with venue hire and catering costs for the year 12 graduation this year.
Secretary and treasurer Jodi Johnson said ticket sales for the 30 May event had already surpassed last year’s effort.
“People were very excited after last year, and keen for it to happen again,” she said.
“There’s 100 tickets that we’ve made available, and as of today (7 May), there’s only 18 left, and last year we had a similar amount of tickets available, but we only sold 76.”
Ms Johnson said they hoped to make it an annual event, but as with any volunteer organisation, it depended on how many helping hands they could get.
“The music bingo is where we can probably go above and beyond, and already this year, we’re talking about the affiliation costs being an ongoing thing,” she said.
“Of course, if we don’t have help or volunteers to run it, we can’t hold the event.
“Like any other volunteer organisation, there’s not many people, and without a couple of committed people, it just doesn’t happen, so as long as we’re present, we hope to continue.”
Ms Johnson also thanked the Cooktown RSL Memorial Club for their donation of $1,000 in support of the event, which will be held from 6-10pm at the Cooktown Amateur Turf Club, with an optional movie character dress-up competition.
