The Lakefield National Park is a popular fishing and camping destination in Cape York.

A SEARCH is underway for a prominent Cape York business operator after he was taken by a croc while fishing in Lakefield National Park.

Cape York Weekly has chosen not to name the man, who lives in Laura, as police have yet to confirm if his family have been notified.

It’s understood he was fishing in Lakefield National Park near Kennedy Bend.

At around 2.30pm, friends heard a scream and when they came to his aid, he was nowhere to be seen.

“We walked downstream looking for him,” they said.

Police are on the scene, along with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service officers.

The last fatal crocodile attack in Cape York was in 2011 when a man was grabbed while snorkelling off Bushie Island, in the Cairncross Island Group, near Shelburne Bay.

Before that, a Scottish man was grabbed by a croc along the Endeavour River near Cooktown in 2008.
