WEIPA’S new state of the art sports centre, to be known as the WASP (Weipa Sports and Aquatic Precinct) will have its grand opening on Saturday, September 11.
The centre was built with $12 million from Rio Tinto’s Weipa Liveability program and includes three squash courts, a yoga/dance studio, a creche, three tennis courts and an indoor sports court.
The centre’s opening event will invite the Weipa community to participate in a range of sporting, health and fitness experiences, including tennis coaching sessions run by Tennis Queensland, a tennis speed serve competition, smoothie making, inflatable attractions for the kids and self-guided tours of the entire facility.
Up for grabs will be thousands of dollars worth of prizes, with organisers promising something for everyone.
Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong Cawley will join Rio Tinto’s Weipa general manager Michelle Elvy and Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland to open the facility, with fans able to personally meet the tennis star after the official opening.
“It has been exciting to witness this high impact project come to fruition. This state-of-the-art facility will benefit the broader Weipa community by ensuring we all have access to a wealth of recreational opportunities,” Ms Elvy said.
“Rio Tinto is proud to have been able to support bringing the Weipa Aquatic and Sports Precinct to life – as something we can all enjoy together.”
