PREVIOUS visitors to Weipa may not recognise the place if they return in the second half of next year as several key projects approach completion.
Goodline won the contracts to construct most of the projects – the Weipa Sports Complex, new CAPS building, new SES facility and the Weipa Showgrounds.
The Jetty Specialist has been handed the keys to fix the Evans Landing boat ramp pontoon.
“It’s an exciting time for the town and we are glad to be a part of it,” said Russell Scikluna, Goodline’s construction boss.
“The Weipa Sports Complex in Rocky Point should be finished by April. I think it’s due to be ready to go by the 11th.”
Mr Scikluna admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic had been difficult for construction in the middle of the year, but that things were now back on track.
“A lot of the work relied on outside resources that we couldn’t get, which hindered the process,” he said.
“Now that the shackles have been loosened we have been able to get stuck in and get things moving.”
The CAPS animal welfare facility in Evans Landing should be ready around March next year, while Stages 1 and 2 of the Weipa Showgrounds are complete, Mr Scikluna said.
“We’ve got a funding application in for Stage 3, which involves fencing the perimeter of the showgrounds and building a permanent storage facility for all of the user groups,” he said.
Work won’t begin on the new SES facility in Rocky Point until the new year and the start date will be dependent on the wet season.
“It’s not a huge project and we should be able to get it done fairly quickly once we start,” Mr Scikluna said.
“I think it’s really positive for Weipa to have all these new projects. It already is a great place to live but this just makes it even better.”
A start date for the pontoon upgrade has yet to be locked in but it should be completed in the first half of next year.
