MORE than 30 bowlers endured oppressive conditions in Weipa over the weekend for the Jeffrey “Skinny” James Memorial event.

Sixteen teams took part in the two-day pairs event which honoured the former Weipa Bowls Club president.

Kayden Burley and Louise Cruse ended up with the honours, defeating Garry Squires and Trisha Price for the shield.

Squires, who knew the long-time president well before his passing in 2013, said Skinny would have enjoyed the event.

“He loved his bowls and he loved Weipa,” the club champion said.

“An event like this would have been right up his alley because it was competitive, social and everyone finished with a smile.”

Weipa Bowls Club was originally located at Rocky Point where the tennis courts now stand and Skinny was president for 30 years, overseeing the transformation to the existing site adjacent to the golf club.

The bowls club hopes to build a roof over the green area in a multi-million dollar transformation to allow bowls to be played year-round.
