EMPLOYEES at Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations will get a significant pay rise as the mining company looks to maintain its core staff in the midst of a boom around the country.
Weipa operations GM Shona Markham told staff last week that they would see the pay rise from July, although it would be backdated from March.
Workers at the Amrun mine will also see a six per cent increase in their allowance for working away from home.
Rio Tinto is also fast-tracking the transition to permanent roles for a number of WorkPac contractors.
“We’ll be converting a number of WorkPac people straight away from our operational areas,” Ms Markham said.
“We are also having a close look at the non-operational WorkPac contractors and we think by September we’ll have a really good view of what we can do to transition some of those workers.
“We’ve genuinely heard that our people want secure conditions and that we want to find a way forward.”
She also said advertised FIFO roles were for contractors on short-term projects on the mine.
