One of Cape York’s treasured destinations, the Bramwell Tourist Park continues to get better with each season.
Managed by former jockey and music promoter Ken Godfrey, there will be live entertainment at Bramwell every night during the tourist season.
Cape York Weekly just travelled from one end of the Cape to the other and stopped in at Bramwell to enjoy the country hospitality.
Not only has Ken made massive improvements to the facilities at the tourist park, with the support of owner Wendy Kozicka, but the quality of performance was terrific.
All-rounder Robbie McGowan describes himself as “the Ed Sheeran of pensioners” and he’s probably not far off that.
But his laid-back style and set of classics had the tourists eating out of his hand. Not that they had much room left in their stomachs.
The other highlight of Bramwell is the famous buffet dinner, which usually opens at 7pm after Kenny’s much-loved station talk, which gives a detailed history of Bramwell and the region.
Not that there was much room left, but the sticky date pudding was a great way to wind up the evening.
“Last year was tough with COVID but we did get a lot of tourists come in late,” said Ken, who has been running the tourist park for a decade.
“We think this year will break all the records based on the tour groups we’ve got coming through and some of the bookings.”
While rooms might be hard to get, there’s no shortage of camping spots on the property, which has been operating since the 1930s.
“At $25 per car we’re cheap to camp and that includes the show at night,” Ken said.
“We’ve got a licensed bar and plenty of food so it’s a great place for tourists to stop by and a great place for locals from Weipa to spend the weekend here.”
