Homegrown Cape York hero Emma Jackson has called for the community to celebrate its local champions by nominating them for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Local Hero Awards.
Ms Jackson, a tireless mental health advocate, co-founder of the annual Conquer the Corrugations mental health awareness walk and a real-life hero who saved her friend’s life after she suffered a massive heart attack, was last year’s Queensland Hero.
As the State Hero, Ms Jackson was awarded a $20,000 grant thanks to Ergon Energy, which she used to start a Horse Wisdom Program at Wolverton Station.
The two-day program was successfully launched in June, allowing participants to work and communicate with horses, helping them develop more control over feelings and thoughts while gaining a clearer understanding of how these affect their choices and behaviours.
Ms Jackson said Cape York would not be able to operate without the RFDS to call upon.
“Living here would be a challenge without them,” she said.
“They are our ultimate lifesavers. They are always on the end of the phone 24/7 with expert advice and solutions.”
Local heroes can be nominated from anywhere across Queensland. Nominations close on 12 December.
