JUST two players managed to break their handicap in the official opening of Weipa’s golf season on Saturday.

Garry Breitkreutz took out the men’s Gumboot Cup with a nett 68.

Despite the early tee times, the field of 23 faced challenging conditions at the Carpentaria Golf Club.

It was hot and humid and even a relieving shower at lunchtime wasn’t enough to cool things down, although it did scare one group off and they pulled the pin at the halfway mark.

Peter Linnehan, who sponsored the Gumboot Cup, was the overall runner-up with a nett 71.

The nearest to pins went to Jamie Hutton on 7 and Luke Wheeler on 18. In the women’s, Viv Chan held off a handful of opponents to win with a nett 78.

The talking point of the women’s field was the eagle on 13 from the much-loved “Nanna” Vicky Molloy, who was thrilled with her shot from 140 metres.

This Saturday is a “bring a friend” event, with the format to be determined.
