BOTH the Weipa Bowls Club and Albatross Bay Resort will open their doors at 8am on Melbourne Cup Day, but punters are urged to get their bets on early.
The fields will be finalised on Saturday night and those wanting a flutter on the Tuesday race can get on from Sunday onwards.
“It’ll get really busy, especially close to the race,” said Albatross Bay Resort publican Tim Broderick.
“Don’t leave it until the last minute. Our staff will help as much as they can.”
There’s a major function organised at the Alby on Cup day, with all proceeds going to CAPS.
“That’ll be on the deck but inside the sports bar we’ll be doing specials and deals,” Mr Broderick said.
There’s no official function at the Weipa Bowls Club, but that’s not stopping the fun, says restaurant manager Chantelle Benford.
“The restaurant will be open and we’ll make it look really nice,” she said.
“We’ll be doing sweeps, prizes for best dressed and other bits and pieces.”
Punters just wanting a beer and a bet will have their own area near the public bar, Ms Benford said.
